A 75-year-old, 700-pound Leatherback sea turtle arrived at 1:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon at Rosalie Bay Resort’s protected beach to nest. The sea turtle was 144 cm long and 110 cm wide. View a video of the sea turtle digging her nest and photos of the event below.
This was the first time this particular sea turtle had nested on our beach in Dominica. She had made a false crawl at 3 a.m. that morning, and then returned in the afternoon to nest.
Nesting during the daylight hours is a rare event, as most sea turtles nest at night when they’re more protected from predators. Her arrival drew a crowd. It was very exciting for our guests and staff – as many had not seen a sea turtle before.
Five other sea turtles nested later that night. All of their nests had to be relocated to the hatchery. And we’re still awaiting the first hatchlings of the season.
Sea turtle season lasts until October. We hope you’ll join us for this exciting time of year and to participate in our sea turtle conservation efforts! To entice you even more, we’re currently offering 33% off daily rates for stays of 2 nights or more.
