Many people often question whether organic is better. Organic farming is better for the environment, as it aims to raise livestock and grow crops in a way that does not pollute and may even help global warming. Livestock is fed organic feed, allowed outdoor access, and raised without synthetic hormones or antibiotics.
It also is better for you. Numerous studies show that pesticides can adversely affect the nervous system, increase the risk of cancer and decrease fertility.
The philosophy of organic food production maintains certain principles:
- biodiversity,
- ecological balance,
- sustainability,
- soil integrity,
- natural plant fertilization, and
- natural pest management.
One way of preventing pests is a farming method called “farmscaping.” Farmscaping creates an environment that attracts beneficial insects and deters harmful ones that destroy crops.
Organic has been proven to use less energy (on average, about 30 percent less). It also is beneficial to soil, water and the local habitat, and is safer for the people who harvest our food.
In the US, there are more than 10,000 certified organic farmers producing 2 percent of the US food supply. On Dominica, we’re proud to provide our guests and environment the benefits of organic farming. Many of our fruits, vegetables and herbs are grown in our organic garden and what we don’t grow, we buy local and organic whenever possible to support island farmers.
Please join us in supporting the environment.
