World Turtle Day
It’s the most magical time of the year in Dominica! May 23 is World Turtle Day, and we’re proud to join the global celebration and share this experience with our community.
Created in 2000 by the American Tortoise Rescue, World Turtle Day is recognized around the world “to help people celebrate and protect turtles and tortoises and their disappearing habitats around the world.”
Home to Dominica’s first sea turtle conservation efforts, our eco-resort has an ongoing commitment to protect the endangered species.
Community Celebration
Our Activities Coordinator, Judy Joyce, is visiting two local primary schools to teach them about sea turtles and our conservation program. The schools will also have an opportunity to “adopt” a sea turtle, and will receive an official adoption certificate.
Then, the Dominica community, island visitors and guests of the resort are invited to celebrate World Turtle Day with us on Saturday, May 21. At 5 p.m., Judy will present a Turtle Talk by Oscar’s Pool Bar. Afterwards, join Judy and our turtle experts for a complimentary turtle tour on the beach. Our black sand beach will be illuminated by Saturday’s full moon, setting the scene for an evening of adventure. We’ve already had 44 confirmed leatherback nestings so far this season, and hope for many more arrivals to help make our guests’ dreams come true!
We’re also extending our community celebration with a beach clean-up on Monday, May 23! The clean-up is led by NET (Nature Enhancement Team), the community turtle group, and NEP (National Employment Program) workers, as well as Rosalie Bay staff. We clear logs, pull grass and haul seaweed. Everyone is invited to join this environmental initiative, as extra hands are always appreciated!
Join the Efforts
For more information about our World Turtle Day festivities, contact us directly at the resort. Or, if you’re unable to join us on World Turtle Day, we offer opportunities to participate in our sea turtle conservation efforts throughout sea turtle season (March – October).
