Wine, Rosalie Bay Resort, DominicaCan wine be good for us? This is a question that many people ask knowing that wine contains alcohol and alcohol is considered a poison to the body. The answer to this simple question is yes BUT in moderation and as part of an overall healthy diet.

Health benefits are derived from moderate wine consumption, defined by the America Health Association as one to two four oz. glasses per day. The amount that we consume matters a great deal. If we drink more than what’s recommended, we lose the health benefits and increase the risk.

The health benefits for drinking moderate amounts of wine include:

  • Decreases the risk of a heart attack.
    According to a publication in the Annals of Internal Medicine, moderate drinkers suffering from high blood pressure are 30% less likely to have a heart attack than nondrinkers.
  • Promotes longevity.
    34% of wine drinkers have a lower mortality rate than beer or spirits drinkers, according to the Journals of Gerontology.
  • Lowers the risk of heart disease.
    Wine contains procyanidins, which protects against heart disease by raising good cholesterol and thinning your blood.
  • Decreases the risk of stroke.
    According to an article published in Stroke, the possibility of suffering a blood clot-related stroke drops by 50% in people who consume moderate wine amounts.
  • Decreases the risk of cataracts.
    32% of moderate drinkers are less likely to get cataracts, as published in Nature
  • Slows brain decline.
  • Reduces the risk of Type 2 diabetes.
    Moderate drinkers have 30% less risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, according to in Diabetes Care.
  • Cuts colon cancer risk.
    Moderate consumption of wine (especially red) cuts the risk of colon cancer by 45%, published in Gastroenterology.

As we strive to continue to achieve good health, we are surprised to learn that moderate amounts of wine can surely keep the doctor away. When you do this, you are not just quenching your thirst but you are boosting your health.
