Wellness Wednesday: A Healthy Shot of Noni

Originally from the Polynesian Islands, noni grows abundantly on Dominica. This plant of longevity, as it is known, has been used since ancient times for a variety of folk medicinal purposes.

Although there are not enough studies to substantiate its health claims, many people around the world testify to the benefits of noni. The fruit of the noni tree has a strong odor and taste that may take some getting used to, but is worth it.

The juice is rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. The leaves also are beneficial and used for Vitamin A deficiency and to treat inflammation such as swelling, broken bones, arthritis, sprains and bruising. Noni has a lot of Vitamin K, which helps blood clot. Therefore, people on blood thinners should not take it.

Here on Dominica, locals drink the juice regularly as a health shot. Rosalie Bay Resort owner Bev is also a fan. She has been drinking it for more than 10 years to help her arthritis, and even makes the juice herself with the fruit that grows all over the property. 

The process to make noni juice takes approximately a week. After picking the fruit from the tree, it sits out to ripen and get soft. Then, it is placed in a jar for a week or so. The juice is then strained from the fruit (the most time-consuming part of the process) and bottled.
